“Sawasdee Thailand!” with students from St. Joseph School

On Tuesday 25 March 2014, the Royal Thai Embassy conducted “Sawasdee Thailand!” (2014) for the second consecutive year by welcoming 19 Grade 4 students from St. Joseph and their teacher, Mrs. Axelle. The objective of the project is to give Belgian school children the opportunity to learn about the different dimensions of Thailand.

Mrs. Chulamanee Chartsuwan, Minister and Chargé d’Affaires ad interim, began the session by welcoming the students in French. Students then learned about Thai culture and values and caught a glimpse of a day in the life of a Thai student through various activities that emphasized the use of the 5 senses, such as learning how to perform the Thai greeting “wai,” how to say “Sawasdee,” and the Thai New Year tradition of Songkran. The students also sampled Thai desserts, fruits and Thai fruit juices. The presentation was conducted by Embassy staff members in French.

“Sawasdee Thailand” was initiated in 2013 and 5 schools are participating in this year’s project as follows: St. Joseph, La Farandole, The European School of Brussels (Uccle), Institut Marie Immaculée-Montjoie, and School No. 7 Bois de la Cambre. Students from La Farandole will visit the Embassy on Wednesday 26 March 2014.
