Betong airport construction in progress

YALA, 27th May 2018 (NNT) – The Governor of Yala, Anuchit Trakulmututa, said the construction of Betong Airport is in progress as planned.

Mr. Anuchit said the construction of the runway is now 40 percent complete, and 20 percent progress for the airport’s passenger terminal construction.

He said the mobile cabinet meeting last year, chaired by the Prime Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, approved a plan to extend the runway to accommodate larger aircrafts. The runway, originally designed at 1,800-meter in length, will now be 2,100-meter long. This will allow the airport to accommodate aircrafts larger than 80-seater models.

The construction of the runway extension will be made in parallel with land expropriation. It is expected the construction of the airport will be completed in 2019, with the official opening for commercial uses in 2020.

The Yala Governor said that after its completion, Betong airport will help raise the number of visitors to the province to one million annually from the current 600,000, with many charter flights bringing visitors from China. The airport will also help boost economic growth of the southernmost province.
