DPM Somkid urges use of tech innovations in food industry

BANGKOK, 2nd June 2018 (NNT) – Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Somkid Jatusripitak has suggested that food producers adopt technological innovations in order to stay competitive in the world market.

According to the deputy premier, Thailand is the 15th largest food exporter in the world, bringing in about 1 trillion baht on a yearly basis, which accounts for 2.3% of the global market share.

He pointed out that food production makes up for 6% of the country’s annual GDP and that 70% of the production is for domestic consumption.

Somkid also stressed the need for a focus on food safety, quality and standards, market connectivity, a balance between demand and supply, and most importantly technological innovations which he believes help the Thai food sector remain competitive in the global arena.

Somkid added he had already instructed the Ministry of Commerce to work with the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Export–Import Bank of Thailand in rolling out projects to cement Thailand’s position as the world’s kitchen.
