Condé Nast Traveler, a leading US travel magazine, has voted Thailand the world’s “Best Country for People” in its 2018 awards. Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, in his national address on 7 September 2018, referred to this honor, saying that the news was encouraging.
Thailand was selected by readers of the magazine around the world. It also came third in the Best Country category behind winner Italy and runner-up Greece. The resort island of Samui in Surat Thani also earned the ninth spot on the top 20 list of the world’s Best Islands.
The Prime Minister congratulated the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok and Six Senses Yao Noi in Phang-nga for coming fourth and fifth respectively in the category of “Best Hotel in Asia and the Indian Subcontinent.” Other categories voted on in this magazine include best airlines, best airports, and best architecture.
He said that these rankings came from the impression of visitors to Thailand, as they had experienced Thai culture, smiles, and generosity, as well as good services offered by the transport sector, restaurants, shops, and hotels. Visitors are also confident about their safety and security while traveling in the country.
The Prime Minister stated that Thailand’s image of unity from the Tham Luang cave incident in Chiang Rai province attracted global interest. With the volunteer spirit of everyone, the country could manage the crisis with great efficiency and effectiveness and succeed in the rescue mission to save 13 lives trapped in the cave.
The remarkable rescue operation reflected the country’s quality of human resources and its good management system, which have been recognized worldwide. The incident also united Thai hearts as one, witnessed by the world’s people following the news on the rescue mission.
He said that Thailand was proud of the global awards and recognition. It was not easy for the country to reach this point. What is more difficult is how to maintain this favorable image and all achievements for the long term. He declared that it was the duty of all Thais to join forces in building a better future for the country.
The Prime Minister also urged everyone to be aware of the proverb “One scabby sheep will mar a whole flock.” In this digital era, a small mistake made by someone might be turned into a big issue online that causes negative effects to others, as well.
