BANGKOK, 17th October 2018 (NNT) – The Cabinet has approved the proposal for Thailand to accede to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Copyright Treaty.
The advisor to the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. Nattaporn Jatusripitak, said on Tuesday that the weekly Cabinet meeting has resolved to endorse the new draft Chambers of Commerce Act and the new draft Trade Associations Act, which were originally passed into law in 1966 and have not been updated since.
The amended versions of both laws were intended to boost the potential of Chambers of Commerce and Trade Associations in Thailand in order for them to help strengthen SMEs further.
Mr. Nattaporn said that there are currently 116 Chambers of Commerce nationwide, including provincial chambers of commerce and foreign chambers of commerce, while there are 2,872 trade associations active across the country.
He added that the Cabinet would submit both drafts to the Council of State and the National Legislative Assembly for review and deliberation before they become effective.
He went on to say that the Cabinet approved the proposed accession of Thailand to the WIPO Copyright Treaty, with the aim of helping improve the protection of copyrighted works at the time when the digital age appears to bring about fast technological changes.
Mr. Nattaporn stated that Thailand’s accession would help boost the confidence of local and foreign owners of copyrighted works as there are now 96 member countries of WIPO throughout the world.
